In combat, the recommendation is usually to take Elven Accuracy, Find Familiar, Shadow Blade (or Haste), Booming Blade, and often Sentinel to try to maximize the rogue's damage. I'm a big fan of adding magic to the rogue and I find the subclass great for out-of-combat utility. Whenever a post appears on here about optimizing rogues, usually the top response is the recommendation of an Arcane Trickster.
